Daily Haiku

It's great fun to write in the haiku form. If you can count syllables, you can do this.

Basic, popular haiku in English is a three line, unrhymed poem of seventeen syllables total. There are many ways to do this, but the most popular is what's called the 5-7-5 form.

Line one: five syllables
Line two: seven syllables
Line three: five syllables.

Traditionally, haiku implies the season of the year or nature,

Torrid southern eve,
cicadas wail in red oaks.
Thunder, smell of rain.

but it's not at all necessary

The split banana
embraced two scoops of ice cream.
She missed her lover.

Cool

There is a decent introduction to the form at Haiku for People. It's a bit insistant in its assertions about the form's structure...but its otherwise clear, short, and an excellent next step if you enjoy the form. It's also loaded with some really nice examples. Wink

Breeze in orchard trees,
small unripe fruits lay scattered---

Night falls, children sleep.

Ninety in the shade
the hammock rocks, effortless---
lawn mowing be damned.

There are flower buds
forming on my dark plum tree:

second sign of spring

Sun breaks through the clouds-
spilling golden light over
my promise of Spring

Tears sting in my eyes
The icy wind races by:

Turning homeward bound.

front yard freshly mown

I miss sighing, windblown grass

yet crickets still sing

Hanging on the line
cold and sodden, washing droops...

Better out than in.
